A 21-month-old infant in the care of the Department for Child Protection (DCP) suffered serious cranial trauma before her death from cardiac arrest in 2012, a coronial inquest in the WA Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie has heard. Baby D, as she is known for legal reasons, was 21 months old when she was brought unconscious to Kalgoorlie Hospital on August 16, 2012, and pronounced dead five days later. Testifying on Friday at the second day of the inquest, paediatric intensive medicine specialist Alan Duncan told the Coroners Court Baby D’s cardiac arrest was triggered by trauma to her brain. He said a post-mortem examination of Baby D identified 49 separate “healing abrasions”, including bruising around her ears and face. “I would havedescribed the cause of death as complications from cerebral trauma,” Dr Duncan told the inquest. “There is no doubt she suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, not explained by any other factor. “I have no idea of the mechanism of that cerebral trauma.” Under extended questioning from counsel assisting the coroner Kate Ellson, Dr Duncan described Baby D’s injuries as stemming from “shearing” of the brain, rather than major head trauma. “(It’s) typically described in shaking of the brain,” he said. Dr Duncan said he could not exclude the possibility Baby D had suffered from shaken baby syndrome, with retinal haemorrhaging the girl suffered consistent with the syndrome’s symptoms. Initially taken into DCP care in Perth when she was five months old, Baby D was later placed in the care of relatives in Kalgoorlie-Boulder so she could be closer to her family.
